Throwback: When Poshmark App Came To OC

Nearly every person has a product in their wardrobe that they do not use any longer and that is usable to make a few extra bucks. That said, some people can find it tricky to start using marketplace applications. Fortunately, in 2019, Poshmark hosted its event ‘Posh Part Live’ in OC to give users access to tips about making better sales, photo opportunities and connecting with peers over drinks.

Poshmark is a mobile application that enables buying and selling used clothing. People who use the application, known as Poshers, can curate their digital closets. Poshmark used to be catered to just women, but it has expanded to product categories for children and men. Cities in the US used to host live events twice per month. The year 2018 bid adieu with the Poshmark live event. Back then, Poshmark’s Senior VP of Community LyAnn Chhay described Los Angeles and OC as a second home as far as Poshmark was concerned.

Describing Orange County’s Poshers as fashionable people, Chhay stated that they knew more about the latest developments in fashion. Chhay also said that the community loved the processes of empowering and lifting each other up. Chhay found everyone to be supportive of Poshmark from the beginning. Since the year 2012, Poshmark’s customer base grew from a small set of individuals to a larger one.

At a nascent stage, there was no option on Poshmark to allow buying a product in real-time, which partly made its team develop Poshmark Live. Chhay said that she would help to establish an informal meeting or happy hour in which users could exchange the funds for the used products available through Poshmark. That was how Chhay planned to facilitate every offline transaction through the application. Poshmark started the option in the year 2012, and it has since been available on the application. Different from the situation in 2012, thousands of individuals came to Poshmark’s events across the nation seven years later.

A Question-and-Answer session with famous Orange County Poshmark users was among the main attractions of the live event. Jennifer Warnes, an England native, said that the application enabled her to establish friendly relationships in an unfamiliar nation. Joy Marino used the application to earn more outside of the job she had on a full-time basis. Describing Poshmark as a positive application for selling products, Marino said that she spent her free time sharing and interacting with others through the app. Jennifer Warnes considered Poshmark a way of finding people who were keen on what she was interested in and who became excited about what she got excited about.

Poshmark’s quality of being community-focused differentiates it from comparable marketplace applications such as Depop or letgo. Attendees sharing stories of making friends for life through Poshmark was not uncommon. Chhay stated that its community of users had always been Poshmark’s north star. Poshmark focused on them and wished to ensure that everybody was having a fine user experience.

There was no plan for Posh Part Live to come back to the county soon after its 2019 edition, but there were regular community meetups known as ‘Posh and Sips’. Poshmark’s Director of Community Adiel Nuesmeyer said that while local Poshers organize the meetups, Poshmark aided in boosting the event through marketing. While coffee shops or restaurants usually hosted the events, these sometimes involved thrift shop hunts for products to list. Nuesmeyer stated that it was a chance for individuals to meet each other and forge relationships through an array of events.

Attendees could participate in a session of closet consultation with a long-time Poshmark user and get advice about making their sales better. Two of those consultants were Andrea Moran and Monique Gatillon. The two aided new customers with customer service, product photography, and presentation on the whole. Consistency regarding posting content, responding to online messages and so forth was the most common tip they used to offer.

While there are several marketplace applications to pick from, Poshmark is perhaps the best choice for an app with user-friendly seller tools and a vibrant user base. Marino described it as a different application from Instagram, eBay, YouShare and Etsy with a community supporting each other.
